Jesus did exactly that. He had a big dinner with a tax collector (稅吏). People were very angry. Why did He do this? Let's open our hearts to learn about God's amazing love!

A Shocking Dinner Party 😲

The Bible Story 📖

After this, Jesus went out and saw a tax collector (稅吏) named Levi. Jesus said to him, "Follow me!" Levi got up, left everything, and followed Jesus.

Levi made a big dinner for Jesus at his house. Many tax collectors and other people were eating with them. The Pharisees (法利賽人 - 宗教老師) were angry. They asked Jesus' friends, "Why do you eat and drink with tax collectors and sinners (罪人)?"

Jesus answered them,
"Healthy people don't need a doctor. Sick people need a doctor. I came to call sinners to change their hearts."

Wait a minute! Tax collectors back then worked for the Romans and stole extra money from their own people. They were traitors (叛徒). Why is Jesus having a big dinner with a thief (小偷)?

The Catholic Church (天主教會) teaches us that God's love is like medicine (藥). Jesus wants to heal (醫治) people's hearts. He doesn't wait for us to be perfect. He loves us first, and that love helps us change!

Old Bags and New Wine 🍷

Jesus also told them a story: "You do not put new wine into old wineskins (皮囊). If you do, the new wine will break the old skins. The wine will spill (灑出來). You must put new wine into new wineskins."

歷史補充知識 / Background History

Back in Jesus' time, people did not use glass bottles for wine. They used bags made of animal skin Wineskins 皮囊. When "new wine" gets older, it expands (膨脹). An old skin is hard and dry. If you put new wine inside, the hard skin will break and go *POP*!

Jesus loved Levi before Levi was a "good" person. We should not look down on people who make mistakes. Be a doctor of love!

Sometimes we think, "I always do things this way!" God wants us to learn new ways to love others. Try a new way to help your family today, or smile at a stranger. Keep your heart soft like a "new wineskin"!

But Jesus is calling us to a new life full of joy. We don't have to be perfect for God to love us.
