Have you ever been so sad that you didn't notice (注意到) someone walking right beside you?

Sometimes, sadness makes us blind (盲目的). But love can open our eyes!

Another boring (無聊的) walking story? 🙄

👼
DerDer (小德德)
Hello, everyone! Welcome back to our Bible reading time! I am DerDer. Today, we are going to read a very special story. It happened in a place called Emmaus (厄瑪烏). It is a story about hope (希望) and opening our eyes!
😈
BadDer (小缺德)
Ugh, walking again? My legs hurt just thinking about it. Why are we reading about two random (隨機的) guys walking in the dust (灰土)? This sounds so boring (無聊的)! Hurry up, I want to play video games!
👼
DerDer (小德德)
Be patient (耐心點), BadDer! This is one of the most beautiful stories in the Bible. It shows us how Jesus is always with us, even when we are very sad. Let's read it together!

A2 English Bible Time 📖

On that same day, two disciples (門徒) were going to a village (村莊) called Emmaus. It was about seven miles (英里) from Jerusalem (耶路撒冷). They were talking with each other about everything that had happened.

While they were talking and discussing (討論) these things, Jesus himself came near and walked with them. But their eyes were stopped from recognizing (認出) him. He asked them, "What are you discussing (討論) together as you walk?"

They stood still, looking very sad. One of them, named Cleopas, said to him, "Are you the only visitor (訪客) in Jerusalem who does not know the things that happened there in these days?"

"What things?" Jesus asked.

They answered, "About Jesus of Nazareth (納匝肋). He was a great prophet (先知), powerful (強大的) in word and action before God and all the people. The chief priests (司祭長) and our leaders handed him over to be killed, and they nailed (釘死) him to a cross (十字架). But we had hoped (希望) that he was the one who was going to save Israel (以色列). Also, it is now the third day since all this happened.

"Also, some of our women surprised (使...驚訝) us. They went to the tomb (墳墓) early this morning. But they did not find his body. They came and told us that they had seen angels (天使), who said he is alive (活著的)! Then some of our friends went to the tomb and found it just as the women had said, but they did not see Jesus."

Jesus said to them, "How foolish (愚笨的) you are, and how slow (遲鈍的) your hearts are to believe all that the prophets (先知) have spoken! Did not the Christ (基督) have to suffer (受苦) these things to enter his glory (光榮)?" And starting with Moses (梅瑟) and all the Prophets, he explained (解釋) to them what was said in all the Scriptures (聖經) about himself.

When they came near the village where they were going, Jesus acted (表現得) like he was going further. But they strongly asked him, "Stay with us! It is almost evening, and the day is almost over." So he went in to stay with them.

When he was at the table with them, he took the bread, blessed (降福) it, broke it (擘餅), and gave it to them. Then their eyes were opened, and they recognized (認出) him! But he vanished (消失) from their sight.

They said to each other, "Were not our hearts burning (心裡火熱) when he talked to us on the road and explained (解釋) the Scriptures (聖經) to us?"

They got up right away and went back to Jerusalem. There they found the eleven disciples (門徒) and the others gathered (聚集) together. They were saying, "It is true! The Lord has risen (復活) and has appeared (顯現) to Simon!" Then the two men told what had happened on the road, and how they recognized (認出) Jesus when he broke the bread.

Is Jesus playing hide-and-seek (捉迷藏)? 🙈

😈
BadDer (小缺德)
Wait, wait! Are you kidding me? These guys followed Jesus for years, and they couldn't see it was him? Did they need glasses (眼鏡)? And why is Jesus playing hide-and-seek (捉迷藏)? "Oh, look at me, I am a stranger (陌生人)!" This is so annoying!
👼
DerDer (小德德)
BadDer, stop it! That is very rude (沒禮貌的)! Do not mock (嘲弄) Jesus! Friends, forgive him. BadDer is just impatient (沒耐心的).

Actually, it was Sunday, and Jesus just rose from the dead. The disciples were very confused (困惑的) and heartbroken (心碎的). When we are very sad, extreme sadness can make us "blind" (盲目的). We cannot see the good things right in front of us. Jesus was just waiting for their hearts to be ready.
💡
Fun Facts (冷知識)

A Long Walk (漫長的路) Emmaus is about 7 miles (11 kilometers) from Jerusalem. That is a 2 to 3-hour walk! No wonder they were so hungry when they got home!

Burning Hearts (心裡火熱) When their hearts were "burning," it means they felt a strong feeling of love and hope. This is the work of the Holy Spirit (聖神)!

The key (關鍵) to opening eyes 🍞

👼
DerDer (小德德)
The Catholic Catechism (天主教教理) teaches us that Jesus wanted them to have true faith (信德). He wanted them to believe the Word of God, not just what their eyes see. Also, look at the dinner!
👼
DerDer (小德德)
When Jesus took the bread, blessed it, and broke it (擘餅), this was the first Mass (彌撒) after he rose from the dead! The Church teaches us that we can truly "see" Jesus when we go to Mass and receive Holy Communion (領聖體).

"Jesus walks with all people who are sad and look down at the ground. He walks quietly with them to give them hope...
Jesus is always beside us to warm our hearts and say: 'Go ahead, I am with you.'"

Our Emmaus Road today 🚶‍♀️

😈
BadDer (小缺德)
Fine, fine. So you are saying if I fail my math test, get yelled at, and feel super sad, Jesus is walking home with me? Even if I can't see him? I guess... that actually sounds nice. But I still have to study for the next test, right?
👼
DerDer (小德德)
Yes, exactly! Jesus is always with you to help you, but you still have to do your best! What can we do now?
01

🗣️ Talk to the Stranger (跟耶穌說話)

When you feel sad, angry, or confused (困惑的), tell Jesus your problems (煩惱). He is a great listener, just like he listened to the two disciples on the road.

02

⛪ Go to Mass (參加彌撒)

Remember the bread! The easiest place to "recognize" (認出) Jesus is at Sunday Mass. Watch carefully when the priest (神父) raises the bread!

03

📖 Read the Bible (讀聖經)

Let Jesus explain (解釋) life to you. Read a little bit of the Bible every day, and see if your heart feels "burning" (心裡火熱) with hope!

👼 DerDer's Final Words (最後想說)——

Life is like a long walk to Emmaus. Sometimes we feel tired and hopeless.

But remember, you are never alone. Even if you are "blind" (盲目的) because of sadness, the risen (復活的) Jesus is always walking beside you.

May we all open our eyes at the Mass, recognize (認出) His love, and keep walking with Jesus!
