Dec. 23, 2025: 1st Reading

📖 The Reading: Malachi 3:1-4, 23-24

Thus says the Lord GOD:
Lo, I am sending my messenger
to prepare the way before me;
And suddenly there will come to the temple
the LORD whom you seek,
And the messenger of the covenant whom you desire.
Yes, he is coming, says the LORD of hosts.
But who will endure the day of his coming?
And who can stand when he appears?
For he is like the refiner’s fire,
or like the fuller’s lye.
He will sit refining and purifying silver,
and he will purify the sons of Levi,
Refining them like gold or like silver
that they may offer due sacrifice to the LORD.
Then the sacrifice of Judah and Jerusalem
will please the LORD,
as in the days of old, as in years gone by.

Lo, I will send you
Elijah, the prophet,
Before the day of the LORD comes,
the great and terrible day,
To turn the hearts of the fathers to their children,
and the hearts of the children to their fathers,
Lest I come and strike
the land with doom.

Context: This is the last book of the Old Testament. God promises to send a special messenger to prepare the way for the Lord (Jesus).

Theme: A Loving Preparation for a Big Guest

Hello! Peace be with you! 🌟

Let’s look at this reading with a happy heart. God is promising something wonderful here!

1. The Helpful Messenger

The reading says: "I am sending my messenger to prepare the way before me."

Imagine you are expecting a very important guest, like the King, to come to your house. You would want everything to be perfect, right?

God knows we are not ready. So, He sends a helper (John the Baptist) to fix the road and move the rocks. He does this because He wants to visit us safely. It is an act of love.

2. The Refiner's Fire (Making Gold)

The text says He is like a "refiner's fire."

This sounds scary, but it is actually beautiful. A "refiner" is someone who makes gold pure. He puts the gold in the fire not to destroy it, but to melt it. When it melts, the dirt (impurities) floats to the top, and he removes it.

God wants to do this for us. He wants to burn away our selfishness and bad habits so we can shine like pure gold. ✨

3. Bringing Families Together

The reading ends with a promise to "turn the hearts of fathers to their children."

Christmas is about family. God wants to fix broken relationships. He wants parents and children to love each other again. This is the best Christmas gift! 🎁

😈 Little BadDer’s Perspective

Theme: The Big Cleanup (And It Will Hurt)

Ugh, are you listening? 🙄

DerDer thinks everything is nice and sweet. But you need to wake up. This reading is a warning.

1. The Strong Soap

The text says He is like "fullers' soap."

Do you know what that is? It is not your gentle face wash. In the old days, "fullers' soap" was strong chemicals used to bleach clothes. They had to beat the clothes hard to get the dirt out.

That is you. You are the dirty clothes. God is coming to scrub you. If you have a lot of sins (bad actions), this scrubbing will be painful. You cannot hide your dirt from Him.

2. Who Can Stand It?

The prophet asks: "Who can endure the day of his coming?"

The answer is: Not you.

You are too comfortable. You think going to church is enough? No way. When the Lord comes, He expects perfection. If you are lazy with your faith, you should be worried.

3. The Dreadful Day

The text calls it the "great and terrible day."

For people who do not listen to God, Christmas is not a holiday. It is Judgment Day.

He is sending Elijah to warn you one last time. If you do not change your heart, the result will be a "doom" (a curse) on the land. So, stop playing games! 🔥

Who was Malachi and why did he say this?

Here is the profile of Malachi, the final voice of the Old Testament.

👤 Who was Malachi?

Malachi was a prophet in the Bible.1 A "prophet" is someone who speaks for God.2

  • Name Meaning: His name in Hebrew (Mal'akhi) means "My Messenger." This is perfect because his book is all about sending a messenger!3

  • Time: He lived around 450 BC. This was about 100 years after the Jewish people returned from exile in Babylon.

  • Location: Jerusalem.

  • The Setting: The Second Temple had already been rebuilt. The people were back in their land, but they were not happy. They were poor, and they felt God had forgotten them.

❓ Why did he say this? (The Problem)

He wrote this book because the people had a bad attitude.

Since they were not rich or powerful, they started to act lazy in their faith.

  1. Bad Sacrifices: Priests offered sick or blind animals to God instead of the best ones.4

  2. No Money: People stopped giving "tithes" (10% of their income) to the Temple.

  3. Broken Families: Men were divorcing their wives to marry younger women who worshiped other gods.5

Malachi spoke to wake them up and tell them that the Messiah (Jesus) was coming to fix everything.

😇 Little DerDer's Perspective

Theme: "God hasn't given up on you!"

"Hi there! Let me tell you the sweet reason why Malachi said this. 💕

Even though the people were behaving badly, God did not destroy them. Instead, He sent Malachi to say, 'I loved you.' (Malachi 1:2).6

Malachi told them about the 'Refiner's Fire' not to scare them, but to give them hope.7 He was saying: 'Don't worry! God sees that you are weak and dirty. He is coming personally to clean you up because you are precious to Him, like gold!'

He promised that 'Elijah' (John the Baptist) would come to help fathers and children love each other again.8 Malachi is the prophet of Fatherly Love!"9

😈 Little BadDer's Perspective

Theme: "Stop being lazy! The Boss is coming!"

"Listen up. Malachi didn't come to be nice. He came because the people were being cheap and disrespectful. 😤

Imagine you invite a King to dinner, but you serve him rotten food. That is what the priests were doing to God! Malachi said this to scare them.

He basically said: 'You think God doesn't care? Just wait. The Lord is coming to His Temple suddenly. And when He comes, He will bring strong soap (lye) and fire. If you don't shape up and stop cheating on your wives and your tithes, you are going to get burned.'

He spoke because the people needed a kick in the pants!"

⏳ The Timeline of Prophets

Malachi is the last name on the timeline. After him, there were 400 years of silence—no prophets spoke until the angel appeared to Zechariah (John the Baptist's dad) in the New Testament.10 That is why Malachi is so important!
